Before we explain the signs, you need to know that termination could be referred to in different ways and could be practised by the employer in different ways as well. You might get fired, laid-off or downsized. Although the words are different, the results are similar.
Here are the differences between being fired, laid-off and downsized:
Being downsized: you continue working as usual and have access to the company’s systems until the last day of the period assigned by the management.
Being laid-off: you are notified that your work ends on a specific day.
Being fired: this is the most humiliating way to be terminated. You are required to leave work immediately after you hand in all the needed items, documents, and your passwords are no longer working on the system.

- THE NEW EMPLOYEE IS GETTING SOME OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Some of your typical responsibilities are redeployed to the newest staff member without giving you an apparent reason why you were not assigned the work you usually are assigned to do.
- YOUR BOSS STOPPED COACHING AND MENTORING YOU
When your boss or supervisor stops paying attention to your work and give you feedback (positive or negative) on your performance and how to improve.
- YOUR ASSIGNMENTS ARE REASSIGNED TO OTHER EMPLOYEES
You are asked to hand over some of your assignments to your colleagues.
- EVERYTHING YOU DO IS NOTED AND DOCUMENTED
Bad performance reviews need evidence and once the boss decides on a case against you is in-the-making, you will notice that your boss and colleagues only communicate in writing with you and document all their interactions with you.
The typical warning phrases you might hear during this period: “I feel that you are not a good fit to the company’s culture”; “you are not a team player”; “you keep repeating the same mistakes over and over”; or “the quality of your work is mediocre.”

It is one of the most prominent warning signs when a new hire with the same skill-set as yours is hired and assigned similar responsibilities as yours with no need for expansion as the workload is the same.

Have you noticed that you are no longer invited to important meetings, gathering or announcements? You seem as if you are the last person to know about many things happening in the company. You are no longer copied in chains of emails that involve your work. These are all indicators that a lousy change will happen soon.

Whether it is new management, downsizing, merger or acquisition, restructuring is inevitable, and there should be some causalities. This sign combined with other symptoms are a definite indicator that you are on the exit road.
- THE COMPANY IS NOT DOING WELL
If you find out the company’s position in the market is critical, decreasing revenues and tight bottom-line, prepare yourself to hear from your boss that you will be downsized or your job will be claimed redundant.
- THE ATTITUDE OF YOUR BOSS AND COLLEAGUES CHANGES
Wither they ignore you or avoid you, you notice increasing criticism or unfriendliness towards you and everyone is stepping back from you, these are warning signs.

If you lately started to spend most of your work-day idle, and your boos do not assign you new tasks, this might mean that your boss is preparing to let you go.
