In JobsInGTA.com, we do not like to categorize some jobs as survival jobs. A job is a job despite what is known in the job market as survival jobs. Survival jobs are usually low-paying jobs taken by a job seeker to generate some income while searching for their dream job. Unfortunately, such a perception stigmatizes some critical roles.
Many newcomers to Canada and professionals in transition need to re-establish and rebuild their careers. This requires time, effort and money. Nothing wrong about seeking jobs in retail, manufacturing or service sectors that pay fair wages slightly higher than minimum wage. To survive a survival job, Jay Shah gives you three tips:
1) Change your attitude
You might have received the most top degrees in your home country and built a lucrative career and climbed the ladder; however, in a new country or a new province, you are just new. You might not have a connection, you may need to study to get certified in a specific field. At the same time, you need to support yourself and your family and your career. Do not look at any job as beneath you. Every position has a certain level of complexity and needs skills and in many cases certification.
2) Stop Complaining
Always be realistic and do not complain. Complaining will not help you, it will only make your life miserable. In a highly competitive job market, landing a job that pays a fair wage and conserves your dignity is a blessing.
Change your words. For example, instead of calling your job, a survival low-paying job, call it a side job or a supporting job or a viable work, because it is. This position supports you and your family and even your career.
Think of all the skills you use while performing your job, and you will see how sophisticated, and in many cases, complicated your job is.
3) Hang On In There
Your personal value and identity have many components, and work is only one component of those. Remember that your job does not identify you and if you think of it as a transitional situation, then do not get upset. Treat your interim job the same way you will treat your dream job. Give it all your attention, excel at it, build your reputation as a reliable and professional person.
